On Tuesday, a violent mob targeted a mosque in Gurugram, resulting in the tragic death of its naib imam. The incident occurred amidst escalating tensions over an attempt to halt a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession in Nuh district. The violence has taken a grim toll, claiming five lives, including two home guards and a resident of Bhadas village.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities swiftly imposed a curfew in Nuh, where the initial clashes took place. The Haryana Home Minister, Anil Vij, labeled the violence as “engineered,” hinting at a planned orchestration. Investigations are underway to identify and hold the culprits accountable.
Details of the attack in Gurugram’s Sector 57 area reveal that the mob set the mosque ablaze and opened fire, resulting in injuries to two individuals, as well as the death of the 26-year-old imam, identified as Saad from Bihar.
In Nuh, where the clashes began, the violence continued to take its toll, with two more casualties succumbing to their injuries. The district witnessed the destruction of numerous vehicles, including police vehicles, amounting to a total of 120 damaged vehicles.
The police have taken significant action in response to the unrest, registering 11 FIRs and detaining 27 individuals connected to the rioting. The curfew and deployment of police and paramilitary forces in the affected areas aim to maintain peace and control the situation.
The Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, has assured the public that the perpetrators will face the “strictest action” and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the state during this turbulent period. To prevent the further spread of unrest, mobile internet services have been suspended in Nuh and Faridabad until Wednesday, and educational institutes were ordered to remain closed in Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal districts as a precautionary measure.
Security has been heightened around all religious places in the aftermath of the attacks to ensure the safety of worshippers. Meanwhile, peace committee meetings have been conducted in Nuh and Sohna districts, where the public has vowed to cooperate with authorities to maintain peace.
